If you’re looking for a chocolatey dessert that satisfies your sweet cravings and sneaks in some nutrition, this Vegan Avocado Chocolate Mousse is your answer! Traditional chocolate mousse is often loaded with heavy cream, butter, and sugar. This plant-based version swaps out those ingredients for wholesome alternatives like avocado and non-dairy milk, while still having a creamy texture and rich flavor with a nutrient boost.

Keeping this recipe at two servings is also fantastic for those moments when you need a little something sweet but don’t want leftovers hanging around. However, if you need to make it for a crowd you can double or triple the recipe.

Why This Recipe is Healthier

  • Avocado Power: Avocados are rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, which can help improve cholesterol levels and keep you feeling satisfied.
  • Lower in Saturated Fat: Traditional mousse relies on heavy cream, which is high in saturated fat. This version cuts back significantly by using avocado as the base.
  • Less Sugar: Sweetened with just a touch of maple syrup and semi-sweet chocolate chips, this dessert is naturally lower in added sugar compared to conventional recipes.
  • Nutrient Boost: Avocados contribute fiber, potassium, and vitamins like B6, while cocoa powder adds a dose of antioxidants.

  • Ripe avocado
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chipsCocoa powder
  • Non-dairy milk – or cow’s milk

Tips for Making

Pick the Right Avocado: Make sure your avocado is nice and ripe—soft enough to mash easily but not overly mushy.

Blend Until Smooth: Use a food processor or blender to get that perfectly creamy, silky texture.

Sweeten to Taste: Before serving, give it a taste. If you like it sweeter, add a little more maple syrup.

Let It Chill: You can dig in right away, but if you refrigerate it for about an hour, it’ll firm up and feel even more luxurious.

Variations

Nut Butter Swirl: Mix in a tablespoon of almond or peanut butter for a nutty flavor.

Mint Chocolate: Add a drop of peppermint extract for a refreshing holiday treat.

Tropical Twist: Top with shredded coconut or blend in a teaspoon of coconut cream for extra creaminess.

Berry Bliss: Layer the mousse with fresh raspberries or strawberries for a fruity parfait like dessert.

Common FAQs

Is there a substitute for the semi-sweet chocolate chips?
You can use dark chocolate chips or a chopped chocolate bar instead. Opt for vegan chocolate if keeping the recipe dairy-free.

Can I omit the espresso powder?
Yes, the espresso powder is optional but enhances the chocolate flavor. Feel free to leave it out if you prefer.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Absolutely! This mousse can be made up to 24 hours in advance. Store it in an airtight container in the fridge.

What if I don’t have a food processor?

A high-speed blender works just as well. Just make sure to scrape down the sides to fully incorporate the ingredients.
