Split Pea Hummus

Split Pea Hummus is a great, healthy snack and appetizer! Easy to make and can be paired with chips, veggies, crackers, and more!

When you think of split peas you are probably thinking of the green, cold soup. At least that is what usually comes to mind!

Even though chickpeas take the spotlight when it comes to traditional hummus, today it’s garbanzo’s cousin’s time to shine, aka split peas.

I am actually going to use yellow split peas instead of the common green ones for a couple of different reasons.

Types of Split Peas

There are two varieties of split peas: green and yellow.

Green split peas are sweeter and have less starch, whereas the yellow variety is milder in flavor. Both are a great source of plant based protein, low in fat, and are a good source of potassium and iron.

Know that they aren’t just for soups! You can sprinkle them on salads, turn them into dips (like we are today), make dressings, and even curries!

Ingredients You Need for Split Pea Hummus

yellow split peas – make sure you cook these first

Garlic – don’t swap the clove for garlic powder, the flavor will not be as authentic

tahini paste – which is ground sesame seeds, so when you are reading the labels there shouldn’t be other processed ingredients

Lemon juice – skip the store-bought and use fresh for the best flavor

Spices: salt, cumin, and cayenne pepper

extra-virgin olive oil – the oil helps make the hummus smoother in consistency and also adds some healthy fats

Garnish with sumac or chopped herbs like parsley

How to Make Hummus From Split Peas

Follow the instructions on the pea packaging to cook them first.

Then add the cooked yellow split peas and garlic to a food processor.

Pulse until the mixture starts looking smooth.

Add the fresh lemon juice, tahini, salt, cumin, and cayenne. Pulse until the mixture is pureed.

Leave the food processor on and slowly pour in the oil until it reaches a consistency you like.

Garnish and serve your split pea hummus!

Do You Have to Soak Split Peas Before Using Them?

Nope! Even though you do need to soak most dried legumes, these are not one of them. They cook quicker than most because they have been processed without the outer shell.

I do recommend rinsing them first and picking out any stones you may find.

What Should I Serve Split Pea Hummus With?

As an appetizer, here are some suggestions. Don’t forget you can eat split pea hummus just like regular hummus, so use it as a spread on sandwiches the next day!

  • Crackers
  • Veggies
  • Chips
  • Pita triangles
  • Pretzels
  • With different varieties of toasted bread
