If you frequent Indian restaurants and love the cuisine, you already know you have to get a side of kachumber raita to complete your meal! And if you’ve never tried it before, you will be blown away.

It’s perfect to serve with grilled meats and veggies. The yogurt is ultra refreshing, especially when you combine hot weather and the spiciness.

What is Kachumber Raita?

Kachumber raita is a traditional Indian side dish that combines the flavors of kachumber (a type of salad) with raita (a yogurt-based condiment). It typically includes finely chopped vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and sometimes carrots, mixed into yogurt.

Spices such as cumin, coriander, and sometimes chili powder are added for flavor, along with fresh herbs like cilantro or mint. The yogurt acts as a cooling agent, making kachumber raita refreshing next to spicy Indian meals. It’s often served with biryanis, pulao, or any Indian curry to balance the heat and add a creamy texture.

What to Eat Kachumber Raita With?

Biryani: The creamy, cooling raita complements the rich and spicy flavors of biryani.

Pulao: Whether it’s vegetable pulao or a meat-based version, kachumber raita adds a nice contrast.

Curries: It’s great alongside spicy curries like chicken curry, lamb curry, or vegetable curry, helping to balance the heat.

Grilled Meats: Tandoori chicken, kabobs, and other grilled meats taste even better with a side of kachumber raita.

Indian Breads: Enjoy it with naan, roti, or paratha to add a creamy texture to bread.

Snacks: It also works well with Indian snacks like samosas or pakoras, offering a cooling dip.

Tips for Making

  • You can serve it immediately but I recommend chilling for a little bit so the flavors are better. It’s one of those dishes that gets better with time.
