With a creamy caper-yogurt spread, salty anchovies, and crusty bread, each slice offers a balance of tang, salt, richness, and crunch. Whether you’re putting together a quick appetizer, a snack board, or a light lunch, this dish is incredibly easy to make and full of flavor.

Healthy Benefits of Anchovy Tapas

Don’t let their size fool you, anchovies and their toppings are surprisingly nutritious:

  • Anchovies are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which support heart and brain health.
  • Greek yogurt adds protein and probiotics for gut support.
  • Capers and lemon juice bring antioxidants and natural zing.
  • Olive oil provides heart-healthy fats.

Ingredients Needed

  • Plain nonfat Greek yogurt and Mayonnaise– Adds creaminess and protein to the spread.
  • Lemon juice – Brightens the flavor and helps balance the saltiness. Orange juice, grapefruit juice, or red wine vinegar can also be used.
  • Chopped capers – Adds a tangy, briny kick that complements the anchovies.
Extra virgin olive oil – Brings richness and heart-healthy fats.
  • Crusty bread, toasted – Serves as a crunchy base that holds up to toppings. I used sourdough.
  • Sea salt and ground black pepper
  • Anchovy fillets in oil – Bold, salty, and packed with omega-3s.
  • Fresh parsley – as a garnish.

How to Make Anchovy Tapas

  1. Make the spread. In a small bowl, whisk together the Greek yogurt, mayonnaise, lemon juice, capers, and olive oil until smooth.
  2. Assemble the toasts. Spread a layer of the yogurt mixture onto each toasted piece of bread.
  3. Season. Sprinkle each toast lightly with sea salt and black pepper.
  4. Top with anchovies. Place two anchovy fillets on each piece.
  5. Garnish. Finish with a few leaves of fresh parsley and serve immediately.

Best Breads To Use

  • Baguette – A classic choice. Slice into rounds and toast for a crisp, sturdy base.
  • Sourdough – Tangy flavor pairs well with the salty anchovies and creamy spread.
  • Ciabatta – Light and airy inside with a crunchy crust—great for holding toppings.
  • Rustic Italian bread – Thick slices with chewy texture that toast beautifully.
  • Multigrain or seeded bread – Adds extra flavor and crunch, plus a nutritional boost.
  • Gluten-free artisan bread – A good option for gluten-free guests, look for one that toasts well and stays firm.

Helpful Tips

  • Toast the bread well so it holds up under the creamy spread and anchovies.
  • Rinse the anchovies if you want a milder, less salty flavor.
  • Serve immediately so the bread stays crisp.
  • Make the spread ahead of time and store in the fridge to save time when entertaining.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Capers: Olives can also be used in place of the capers.
  • Add heat: Sprinkle with red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce.
  • Make it citrusy: Add a bit of lemon zest to the yogurt mixture.
  • Go herby: Mix chopped dill or chives into the spread for an herbal twist.
  • Include extras: Add a thin slice of tomato or cucumber under the anchovies for freshness.

Common FAQs

What do anchovies taste like?

Anchovies are salty, savory, and intensely umami-rich, with a soft texture. They pair well with creamy and tangy flavors that balance their boldness.

Can I make these ahead of time?

You can make the yogurt spread ahead, but it’s best to assemble the tapas just before serving to keep the bread crisp.

Are anchovies healthy?

Yes! Anchovies are high in protein, calcium, and omega-3s, and they’re lower in mercury than larger fish.
